We're back! What a crazy, lovely, fun, overwhelming, exciting and WONDERFUL time we've had here at Andewyn Designs! I'm so grateful for all the incredible support this season...Thank you!

I'm getting back to a less frenetic pace in the studio, working on new pieces and exploring new techniques. Very exciting.

A Walk In The Park

We went for a walk in the park. The sun was on its way down, but we didn't mind.

We found a message, sweet, and seeming as if the land herself spoke to us.

We saw many trees.

And a furry friend. Well, MANY furry friends. They were little ambassadors we met along the way.

Funnily enough, we met up with trees who must be cousins of the Ents...Mr. Tolkien's Ents. They were a little disconcerting at first, but then were very welcoming once we got past the introductions.

Sometimes all I need is a long walk... and once I open myself to the possibilities, the gifts are priceless.

It's Monday! Already....we've got windy weather in Tennessee today, it reminds me of Daytona in December. I'm feeling restless, a little out to sea, but I wrote a to do list to focus...I think this will become a daily ritual. It's already helping.

I came across one of my very first pieces the other day in the studio....

When I see this girl, it takes me back to my first pair of pliers... my hands moving past the awkard stage, becoming more adept. Learning the lengths of wire required to make a closed loop or a spiral, and the different gauges best used for different components (this was also before I learned the use of a torch). It was a dawning of understanding that I had in my hands and heart the ability to create something unique, artistic (this still makes me giddy to think about), wearable (as in other people might like to wear something I made! WHEEE!) and it also gave me a way to incoporate my love of, and pay homage to, the natural world...anyway I saw fit (which also makes me giddy).

It was such a freeing feeling.

I don't think I'll ever let this girl go...She represents so much, reminding me of where I began and how far I've come.... and also of other things that I may sometimes forget. Sometimes I need the nudge.

I took a walk outside yesterday, and it was such a beautiful day. The birds were singing. The humidity was low (THANK GOODNESS!). And it just brought a smile to my face. I want to share the love! So, I'm having a little sale in the Etsy store for my Facebook friends....You should check it out...This is a great time to get a piece you may have had your eye on~

Of the wind

Things have been a little crazy lately...

Words have been hard, come out wrong, most times the implication missing the mark of what was meant, feelings hurt, treaded upon, mixed up, upside down....storms, stormy, storming.

When this happens, my first inclination is to go dark... But, I'd like to face the storm everytime. Be strong and courageous and face what comes, never to let misunderstandings stand. They can be destroyers...of so many things.

I'm working on it.

In the process of working on it, I went to my studio and made these girls. On a Desert Wind is her name. She sings to me of the west, because west means free to me. And when I dream, I dream free.

I hope the winds are carrying you everything joyful and happy.

On my way out to the backgarden yesterday, this greeted me:

A moment of love between my two boys...who can usually be found chasing each other frantically or playing racer kitty through the house. They are truly brothers~

Roses from my yard.... the reddest. Their scent is downright heady now.

From Ernie and his magnolia tree. Blossom. It was closed this morning and has been opening gradually all day.

The Road Home

It reminds me of mountain passes. A canopy of tree limbs full of dew heavy leaves above and patches of night sky peeking through.

So I named this ring The Road Home...because this has been the scene of my road home many times, leaving my mountains....but knowing I'll return again soon.

I'm amazed all the time by this silversmithing path I'm walking. My friend Stephen had an opening for his work this past weekend. It was a fantastic evening with friends we hadn't seen in a while and the awesomeness that is Stephen's work.... A few photos:

I love this guy's face...Striking.

My favorite..... He appears to be looking at you from anywhere you stand.

Also adding to the awesomeness factor was that the opening was held in an extremely old building (some type of factory I'm guessing). Check out this old time clock:

I'm not sure what these are... Some type of alarm? I don't know, but we thought the building was pretty awesome~ It was like stepping back in time.

Galaxies: From The Milky Way

If we had a spaceship and could travel through the universe,

skipping over and around celestial bodies, skirting the edges of the Milky Way, shooting through to the other side of a galaxy we’ve never even heard of before...

I believe the colors would be enough to overwhelm us, until even with eyes closed the darkness would sparkle and glitter.

Etsy Discovery: Al Brydon Photography

I recently found an amazing photographer on Etsy I want to share with you~

I found him through the Darkness treasury that we're both in right now, lot's of great artists in this one....Al Brydon's work really grabbed me.

This is one of his photos, called Rossbeigh Beach, located in Ireland. The drama of this picture and the contrast of the colors and textures of the rocks against that stormy sky really pulls you in. He not only works in color, you should also check out his black and white photography, they are so full of depth and drama...and Ireland. Land of a few of my ancestors and dreams~

Ode to Smoky

Here’s a little ode to the mountains I love. Inspired by the backpacking trip I went on.

She’s called Verdant, because that was the feel up there. Verdant, lush, everything so GREEN. And so many shades. It was sensory overload in those hills and I loved every minute of it.

She’s crafted from sterling silver and one delightfully expressive moss agate cabochon. The inclusions, oh the inclusions! It appears as if little bits of grass were trapped inside during this stone’s development… Absolutely swoon worthy~ If I remember correctly, I did do a little jig when I found these cabs in one of my favorite supplier’s bins. She just smiled at me..Mary’s used to my antics by now~

Also inspired by Appalachia are The Depths of Maggie, composed of sterling silver and prehnite:

Their name is a little tribute to Maggie Valley, that sweet little town tucked away in the North Carolina side of the Smokies. I’m telling you, there’s nothing like those mountains… so many treasures around every corner.

I hear her song constantly even though I’m three hours away… Some of my favorite days are spent getting lost and then finding my way again on her windy, twisty roads.

Whenever I arrive I can hear her whispering, “Welcome home”.

The Latest From The Texture Grove

I spoke in a previous post about how I've been experimenting with textures...developing patterns on metal with different objects. I gotta say, it’s a lot of fun swinging hammers. I am after all a girl who loves tools and hammers are awesome.

The following girls are more products of these experiments.

Freia. She's my free-spirited, southwestern girl. The combination of turquoise and coral is one I've loved for as long as I can remember. It’s one of those combinations that brought home to me just how much love I have for the more rugged stones over the "tameness" of the stones that may be more synonymous with "fine" jewelry. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate those refined ladies... but the stones that look as if they just came up from the earth, even when polished, like turquoise, jaspers, jades, agates (there are so many!), etc....They have a wildness that *thrills* me.

Jakocia are my newest post earrings. I'll be honest, I've been wearing these everyday...not even taking them off to sleep. They're that comfortable!

The story for these girls was inspired partly by the lines of maybe. I'm a huge fan of Robert Jordan's work in the Wheel of Time. I'm not usually much for Fantasy novels, but his imagination and the world he built in these books had me from the second I started reading his work years ago....and the story is still being told (by another writer, as Mr. Jordan has passed away)~

One of the things he created in this series is a place that exists were all of the turns we might've taken, but did not...the choices we might have made, but instead chose the path we're on now... A place where all of those choices and turns are played out, sort of a parallel universe layered with the worlds those different choices would make.

The Jakocia earrings (the name is one I imagined for these girls) are patterned with lines where some intersect, some turn sharply away from each other and others run parallel… for a time. They create a pattern that is unique every time. Just as our choices, all of them, the one's we might have made and the one's that we have made that lead us to now aren’t going to be exactly the same, step for step, as the next person’s.

The Things I've Seen - Appalachian Trail Edition

I went on a three day backpacking trip last weekend that started in Cades Cove and took us along a portion of the Appalachian Trail (or The AT as seasoned hikers call it). It was an incredible journey. 18 miles of the most strenuous, most fascinating, and most breathtaking things I believe I've ever experienced.

A few pictures from the journey:

Cades Cove is in the distance...It's where we started the trail. Viewed from Rocky Top, Tennessee.

Our sleeping quarters....shared with the thru hikers. Not very comfortable, but it was shelter. And there was a fence across the front to keep the bears out (!!)

Thru hikers - They were fascinating. They hike the entire Appalachian Trail for around 6 months out of the year.

The Flood

If you've seen the news lately, you know that Nashville has been devastated by the rain that fell for two days straight over the past weekend. All over Middle Tennessee, our rivers, creeks and lakes have overflowed. In Nashville, the Cumberland River, who has always hugged our town in her strong embrace, overflowed from the incredible rain fall we received. She made her way up and over the boundaries that usually contain her and flowed down the streets of Nashville, devastating our city and her landmarks.

It happened so fast, and with no warning so there were many people who were trapped on the highways and interstates because the waters rushed over them before they could get out. People's houses are filled with feet of water. Several of my friends had to evacuate their homes, leaving behind most of what they own, thankful to just make it out safely. There were some in this state who did not.

We're in recovery mode now, a healing mode to help those who've received the worst of this devastation. Tennessee is known as the Volunteer State, and that spirit is being manifested already.

We're going to make it through this.

It's pouring rain here today with threats of tornadoes (yes, I'm worried), but I'm working in the studio so there's a little something good coming out of this stormy day~

I've got a couple new girls to share who are already in the Etsy store... They'll be on my website by tonight.

First is le Lustre... So named because of the incredible brightness and shine of her. Mirror bright!

And Shield now comes completely fabricated in sterling silver. The brass version has received a lot of great feedback and I've loved wearing that ring. She's still available in the shop, but I thought a sterling version would be a little more versatile. Shield in sterling comes with a matte finish. A friend says she almost looks pewter. I like that~

Captured Eye

Last Friday night my good friend Christopher had a photography show. He hosted it and invited three other photographers to show also. It was a great night of conversation, laughter, music and incredible photography. So many people came out to show support and there were also those who simply wandered in. It was a beautiful night in Knoxville~ These are some images I took that night (with my Iphone, so the quality isn't spectacular).

His company is called Captured Eye Photography...he does not have a website (yet!) but word of mouth works really well for him... I'll be talking more about him over time, he's one talented guy!

I've got a few new girls in the shop, and may be adding more tomorrow....More about that soon~

Late Week Update

This week has flown.... FLOWN by! My hammer has been swinging and my torch constantly heating~

I've a couple new girls to share.... They've both been in the shop for a few days so we're a little late, but here they are:

Time is a Mountain in sterling silver and moostone

Because in my mind time is like a mountain, with sharp climbs and steep descents. I love this girl.

And then we have The Wind of The Cotswolds in sterling silver and angelite (what a wonderful name for this stone!)

These girls are my little ode to the Cotswolds, I visited there years ago and it was amazing. I've never seen anything quite like it.

So there's my little update...With more to come soon~

And I'm so excited about this little bit of news . There's been a lot of rock slides going on up in those mountains. But I'm anxious to get up there. It's been too long.

The Waverider

Recently I was asked to design a ring~ The ocean and the waves this fearless girl rides were the subject.

This project stretched me as a metalsmith. The design was not born overnight, much time was spent getting it the way I saw it in my head (I'm especially fond of the reticulation). I loved every minute of it and I thank YOU for asking me to design something to symbolize your love of the ocean. It was my pleasure.

This is the Waverider Ring, constructed from sterling silver and larimar. The inside of the band reads "It's How You Ride It".

This past weekend consisted of a little of this...

Arthur taught me a few lessons.... He was the wind~

And there was a whole LOT of this... With Bill Miller's graceful notes gliding through the studio. When I need the feel of wide open spaces and everything wild and free, I turn to his music.

Tammy was customized for a lovely person. I like this version....

I feel like I'm still running, trying to catch up from custom orders and other businessy things that must be done. It's good. I wouldn't have it any other way, well, maybe just a little more time.

A ring is being finished that consists of larimar and sterling...I can't wait to show it to you~ Hopefully soon~

Trio For The Stars

I'm a star gazer, I freely admit it. Those little pins of light in the sky intrique me. When the sky is so clear that you can see the tails and spins of shooting stars and glittery dust spread across the sky, you have to stand still and take it in. The little bit that we can glimpse here on earth.

For those of us fascinated by the final frontier and who loved that wonderful and memorable line...."second to the right, straight on till morning".

The Walker

I help out on a farm. I'm not sure if I've mentioned it before, but we're primarily a Tennessee Walking Horse establishment. There are a few boarders so we have a couple of rescued Thoroughbreds and a few quarterhorses (including my buddy Arthur!), and even a couple of ponies with all the attitude and swagger they bring (Oh, those ponies!).

This weekend Hal, the owner, hosted a clinic at the farm for training new inspectors on what to look for when checking a Tennessee Walking horses' hooves.

Why?

Because there are people out there who torture them with acid (called "soring") among other awful things to get the exaggerated gait that you may have seen before. Horses do not move this way naturally. Until a few years ago I didn't know this was how it was achieved, and maybe you didn't either. It's disgusting to see once you realize the pain these babies go through to make them walk like that.

The Walking Horse Association is diligent about catching horses that have been abused. Owners who abuse their horses are not allowed to show them in the association's events. That's what this clinic was about, training inspectors on what to look for. It's an intense process and those who attended were instructed ever so carefully.

Hal has rescued many horses that were tortured, like John Henry here.

When John Henry came to Hal, someone had used acid on him and he was in really bad shape. Hal took the time to get him back to health and now he's a show horse, with his own beautiful natural gait. It took years to undo most of what had been done to him, and mentally some of it will always be with him. I think changing his mental view of humans is what took the longest because he'd learned that humans were the source of pain. He didn't trust, understandbly. Now he's a loving, sound boy because of the time that was spent retraining and building the trust back.

If you ever get a chance, you should go to to a Walking Horse show. They're incredible to see.

I also hung out a bit with these two this weekend.

I've also got new work to show soon, yes I am still a designer and fabricator of jewelry! I looked back and realized that most of my recent posts have not had any jewelry in them. For shame!

I was introduced to Glen Phillips' music Tuesday night.

Well, I knew him from Toad the Wet Sprocket, but hadn't heard his solo stuff. I like him.

Vienna Teng and Alex Wong of The Paper Raincoat opened for him, other artists I had heard of but never seen live.

Her fingers flew over that piano..... Made me want to sit down at mine again.....There's never enough time~

I got a message yesterday from the curator of this Treasury that I was included in it. It's a wonderful Treasury, I love the colors and it's introduced me to some other great artists on Etsy.....and check out the title. I'll be honest, I didn't think we'd end up on the front page, not because it's not a great Treasury. It is, and I love everything about it. But, well, I just didn't think it would happen. How often do you ASK to be put on the front page (or featured) and actually end up there????

But she asked, and she received. All I can say is, thanks for taking me along for the ride!
